Diovan Medication For High Blood Pressure Information in Answers
Is Diovan a good high blood pressure medication? I know of a person who was taking Diovan and the doctor kept increasing the dose until he had her at the maximum dose. Still her blood pressure was high. So the doctor added doxazosin and her blood pressure came down. My friend said the Diovan made her feel weak so she quit taking it and the doxazosin seems to be keeping the blood pressure down by itself. Does Diovan do anything?

G h replied: "diovan its like a vitamin for people with blood sugar"

ckm1956 replied: "You have to love people who answer when they have no idea what they're talking about... It is a good med. Not all meds for high BP work well for every patient. Never stop taking a BP med without consulting your doctor."

If I have run out of Diovan medication for high blood pressure, what can I do unitl I get more? Need a temporary solution for high blood pressue lowering (out of meds)

Lacy replied: "Natural Remedies for High Blood Pressure Lifestyle changes and natural remedies may help to control high blood pressure, but your doctor may also recommend medication to lower high blood pressure. It is important to work with your doctor, because untreated high blood pressure may damage organs in the body and increase the risk of heart attack, stroke, brain hemorrhage, kidney disease, and vision loss. See a drawing of a hypertensive heart. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) There is some evidence that the supplement CoQ10 may help to reduce high blood pressure. A 12 week double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of 83 people with systolic hypertension examined the effect of CoQ10 supplements (60 mg twice daily). After the 12 weeks, there was a mean reduction in systolic blood pressure of 17.8 mm Hg in the Coq10-treated group. Another study conducted at the University of Western Australia looked at the effect of CoQ10 on blood pressure and glycemic control in 74 people with type 2 diabetes. Participants were randomly assigned to receive either 100mg CoQ10 twice daily, 200mg of the drug fenfibrate, both, or neither for 12 weeks. CoQ10 significantly reduced systolic and diastolic blood pressure(mean reduction 6.1 mm Hg and 2.9 mm Hg respectively). There was also a reduction in HbA1C, a marker for long-term glycemic control. To learn more about CoQ10, read the Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) fact sheet. Garlic In a meta-analysis of seven randomized controlled trials of garlic supplements, three trials showed a significant reduction in systolic blood pressure and four in diastolic blood pressure. Researchers concluded that garlic powder supplement may be of clinical use in patients with mild high blood pressure. Garlic supplements should only be used under the supervision of a qualified health practitioner. Garlic can thin the blood (reduce the ability of blood to clot) similar to aspirin. Garlic may interact with many drugs and supplements such as the prescription "blood-thinners" drugs such as Coumadin (warfarin) or Trental (pentoxifylline), aspirin, vitamin E, gingko. It is usually recommended that people taking garlic stop in the weeks before and after any type of surgery. To learn more about garlic, go to the articles about garlic. Hawthorn The herb hawthorn is often used by traditional herbal practitioners for high blood pressure. In a randomized controlled trial conducted by researchers in Reading, UK, 79 patients with type 2 diabetes were randomized to receive either 1200 mg of hawthorn extract a day or placebo for 16 weeks. Medication for high blood pressure was used by 71% of the patients. At the end of the 16 weeks, patients taking the hawthorn supplement had a significant reduction in mean diastolic blood pressure (2.6 mm Hg). No herb-drug interactions were reported. Fish oil Preliminary studies suggest that fish oil may have a modest effect on high blood pressure. Although fish oil supplements often contain both DHA (docohexaenoic acid) and EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid), there is some evidence that DHA is the ingredient that lowers high blood pressure. Learn more about fish oil. Folic acid Folate is a B vitamin necessary for formation of red blood cells. It may help to lower high blood pressure in some people, possibly by reducing elevated homocysteine levels. One small study of 24 cigarette smokers found that four weeks of folic acid supplementation significantly lowered blood pressure. Learn more about folic acid."

Brrrr replied: "Panther, there are no clinically effective over the counter or herbal remedies that will lower your blood pressure by more than 5 mmHg. Important question for you: What is your blood pressure? Have you checked your blood pressure today? In the US, most pharmacies have free BP machines. If it is <160/100 and you do not have chest pain, headaches or dizziness then it is probably not an emergency. Remain calm, avoid caffeine stress nicotine and salty food. Call your doctor tomorrow for an appointment. If it is >160/100 and/or you have the above symptoms, you have a hypertensive emergency. Go to the nearest emergency room I will resist the obvious temptation to suggest calling your pharmacy for a refill. I will assume there is a barrier to you getting your Diovan (Valsartan). Perhaps the cost? It is a very expensive medication (~$2 per pill). If so, there are many less expensive medicines on the market. Lisinopril and enalapril, for example, are similar generic blood pressure medicines that cost ~50 cents per pill. Ask your primary doctor for a generic medicine. There are many options."

How to quickly lower blood pressure.? I take medication for blood pressure (diovan), although it is usually OK even without the meds. I ran out a couple days ago and cannot get to the pharmacy until tomorrow. A few hours ago I started feeling antsy or jittery. I checked and my BP is very high for me. Is there anything I can do to temporarily lower my BP until I can get the RX refilled?

merillo5 replied: "I would think drinking ALOT of water and peeing alot should wash out the salts from your body which could be causing you to have high blood pressure.Honestly that is just a guess on my part. You should go to the Emergency Room ASAP because you really cant play with blood pressure, its way to dangerous. Good luck and hope you feel better soon."

Man replied: "getting a message or back rub lowers your heart rate and blood pressure but you should at least get a checkup at the emergency room to make sure you wont have a heart attack"

How do I repair slight kidney damage caused by blood pressure medication; which I am no longer taking? I trusted my doctors, so I took diovan 160mg and hydrochlorothiazide 25mg; eight years for high blood pressure. These drugs have harmed my kidneys. I've lost 20% function, stopped the drugs, found a natural product (Hyperexol) that has normalized my high blood pressure. I'm told kidneys cannot be repaired. I don't believe it! I'm thinking fasting, faith, and prayer, is a good place to start. I remember when doctors said liver and hearts couldn't be repaired; they have been proven wrong. I am otherwise healthy. I eat organic and take liquid vitamins and liquid minerals each day, plus Hyperexol, and I walk and excercise daily.

Frankie replied: "I believe you are Correct in all you just stated. I know someone who said her kidneys failed due to Diovan (high blood pressure med) and she is on diatalis machine. best wishes in all! ; the lady mentioned also had to have her hand and fingers removed but i don't remember REASON for that! i not sure if she's a diabetic or not, but I think she is."

sOuL dOcToR replied: "Take the Homeopathic Remedy SULFUR 200C once a day for three days first thing in the morning after three days let me know your progress, symptoms and condition. After three days start taking BERBERIS VULGARIS (Mother Tincture) 20 drops in about one sip of water thrice a day half hour before or after meals and yet again keep me posted about your progress every week atleast. No side effects or complications. If it does not helps you it wont give you any sort of trouble or complications. Nothing works better in conditions like yours then these. Take Care and God Bless you ! Getr well soon friend."

DENISE replied: "i agree that with time your body will heal it self and you must know that it was 8 years you took this meds and it's going to take at lest half of that to get back the norm you was. it just takes time and a lot of GOD"

What is the best combination of medications for high blood pressure and generalized anxiety disorder? I currently take the following meds: metoprolol, felodipine, diovan, aspirin, lexapro, and gabapentin. I still feel depressed and anxious, but my blood pressure is under control. I just feel bad...tired, upset stomach, blah.

nedree@verizon.net replied: "the next best combonation is to go to a doctor.if what you are taking was not prescribed.getof it NOW.it could very well be the cause of how you feel now. good luck."

Nurse Tiffy replied: "Clonidine. It is classified as a anti-hypertensive medication (high blood pressure) but is used just as much if not more for Anxiety and Mood stabilization. It will help calm you down, think a little clearer and also has a side effect of causing drowsiness (not extreme if using low doses)."

What are the best tolerated blood pressure medications without side effects? For the past month my blood pressure has been high. My doctor put me on diltia XT and Diovan. After a week they are making me feel strange, heavy chested, cold and just plain lousy. Has anyone had anything different that they have tolerated better that I can ask my doctor about? Thanks.

bauerbd replied: "It would be unusual to be put on two blood pressure medications at the same time if you had none before. You are currently taking an Diovan which is an ARB (angiotensin receptor blocker) and diltia XT which is a calcium channel blocker (CCB). Usually people have problems with families of drugs, not individual drugs within a family. I wouldn't suggest using an ACE inhibitor since they are similar to ARB's. You could ask for hydrochlorothiazide HCTZ which is an old school diuretic BP med but works well. You could also try a beta blocker like metoprolol. Either the CCB or the ARB is causing you problems. I would suspect the CCB rather than the ARB. Talk to your doctor about dropping one of your meds and adding in a different family. Sometimes diet and exercise allows a person to drop down to one medication rather than two!"

i have a big headache and i have high blood pressure. what should i do to take the headache away? the headache started 3 in the morning. and i also take lorazepam and diovan. what medication should i use for my headache? im 16 years old. and im thinking bout taking tylenol 8 hour pain reliever and fever reducer.

Brandi M. replied: "if you have high BP tylenol is your best bet"

Counsellor Oneil replied: "Consult your doctor for BP. Lorazepam would indirectly help in reducing BP by calming you down."

tkb5055 replied: "If there is any doubt??? Do not hesitate, It is a much better idea to actually see your Doctor. Apparently you are uncertain about your dosage or what type of meds. that you should be taking. Let your Doc. do his job. Your meds. may be the cause, hope your are feeling better soon."

Dave replied: "Having a headache and a high blood pressure indeed a big thing to handle. High blood pressure is indeed a serious one cause it can lead up to death due to heart attack and many more, So you better consult and expert about this. According to this article that I have read today: "The best possible chance to create a positive change in your headache or migraine symptoms is for those five treatments to be close together, that is, twice a week for two weeks and then again in the following week.""

High Blood Pressure...prevention.? I have to ask again do you know of an effective way of lowering blood pressure .... apart from medication that is? I'm on Diovan and it does not seem to be helping. Been back to the doctor who is at a loss...so now I want to see if the alternative medicine approach will work for me. My present approach prescribed medication + healthy eating + weight watching+ excercise Looking at all the factors metioned perhpas in my case stress is the most potent so I will have to try and re address the balance though this will be diffilcult for me as I walk the tight rope most of the time. Also my weight is probably a contributory factor. So I need to get it sorted or else...I could end up having a stroke.

noitall Yorkshire England (U.K.) replied: "Restrict salt intake, regular exercise, fruits & veg, sounds like you are doing all the right things already"

Shuddertoes replied: "You're doing everything right. Your doctor being "at a loss" over this is odd...surely he knows that there are dozens and dozens of HBP medications. Many people are prescribed a few different kinds until they and their physician find one that works the best for them."

Brittany A replied: "Exercise and maintaining a healthy weight are both great ways to help high blood pressure. Stress reduction measures should also be taken. Also, have you heard of the DASH diet? It is recommended for high blood pressure. Eat a diet rich in veggies, fruit and nonfat dairy products. Limit alcohol intake to no more than two drinks per day and a biggie: lower your salt intake!! Also, if you are a smoker, quit. It is a vasoconstrictor which means is narrows your blood vessels, making high blood pressure worse! Hope this helps!"

ahsan a replied: "High blood pressure is of two types. The "Essential" hypertension has no cause & can not b prevented. The "Secondary"hypertention is due 2 a cause & may b prevented by removing that cause. In addition 2 medication, it is essential that; Weight is 2 b watched. No extra table salt 2 b taken. No saturated fats (which increase bad cholestrol) 2 b taken. No smoking Regular exercise like swimming, walking."

Esmerelda replied: "Some people have a family tendency toward high blood pressure which can make it more difficult to treat. But for my husband, we are doing all the things you are doing, but the thing that has helped the most is the workout each morning before he goes to work. 3-4 times a week we get up and go to the YMCA for a half hour on the bike and a tour of the weight circuit. It has really made a significant difference in his ability to handle the stress of his job and his blood pressure reflects that. As of his last doctor's appointment he was 120/80 and that's a huge improvement from where he was. I'm not saying the medication hasn't been a factor, but the more strict we are about the exercise, the better he has done with the medicine."

rosieC replied: "You are on the right track. Regular exercise and a well balanced and healthy diet. Preferably, a DASH diet ( Dietary Approaches to STop Hypertension) and maintaining a healthy weight. Prevention of hypertension centers on avoiding or eliminating known risk factors. Even persons at risk because of age, race, or sex or those who have an inherited risk can lower their chance of developing hypertension. The risk of developing hypertension can be reduced by making the same lifestyle changes recommended for treating hypertension: reducing salt intake reducing fat intake losing weight getting regular exercise quitting smoking reducing alcohol consumption managing stress"

Tim W replied: "Lose weight."

I have low diastolic blood pressure ? My doctor has doubled my antihypertensive medication and now my blood pressure is running about 100/50 - it never was very high to begin with, running about 130/89 or so and I took Diovan/HCTZ 80/12.5 he has now doubled it and I am concerned for the low sometimes 80/40 blood pressure. Will this be harmful to me?

Thallie replied: "No. Trust me. On a stressed out day, I'm 60/45. I'm known to go as low as 40/20 and feel absolutely fine. Low blood pressure can actually be a health benefit, as it really lowers your risk of things like heart disease. You do have to watch out though: you do get prone to dizziness, and can sometimes be groggy for no apparent reason. You should also be cautious when giving blood/having blood taken. Even one vial can drop you enough to cause a fainting spell. If you have any taken, be sure to have some juice handy and sit there for about five minutes. If you want to give blood, tell the nurse about your blood pressure first."

Fater45 replied: "You need to go back to your doctor and have him readjust your medication. In the mean time eating balanced, and a very wide variety of foods will help your body to function better and thus regulate your blood pressure. Have a meal of fresh raw fruits per day. Include nuts and seeds in your diet. Have a meal of toss vegetables per day. Your main meal should be of mainly vegetables. For your starch eat foods such as yam, potatoes, pumpkins, breadfruits, green bananas, cassava, etc. Because your body require to be slightly alkaline in order to keep healthy, then your overall daily meals should more alkaline than acidic. To achieve this you need to consume each day, 60% vegetables of which 50% should be eaten raw; 20% fruits; 10% carbohydrates (starchy foods as stated above); 10% protein inclusive of meats, fish, nuts, seeds, and other grains. Your proteins will provide you with the required fats that you need in your diet. Never strip your meats of all the fats. Fats inclusive of saturated fats, are important for the production of hormones necessary for the proper function of your organs. Green leafy vegetables and beef are excellent foods for preventing your pressure from going low. Preparing you meals with garlic also helps to prevent your pressure from going high. Do not be fooled by anyone. Low blood pressure do lead to fainting which can lead to fatality depending on where you faint. Having your blood pressure close to the average of 120/80 or at a point where you do not have dizzy spells, faint spells, or any other symptoms associated with hypo or hypertension is ideal."

extremely high blood pressure? Was just dismissed from hospital, was in there four days. My blood pressure was 237 /119 in emergency room. I had a heartattack in summer of 2007. Have been taking Diovan 320 (1 a day, and Metoporoil 100 mg (2 times a day.) plus plavix 75 and asprin..They took cat scan of my head,,luckly no stroke .EKG was good, blood test to check heart enzymes was normal , they took like 3 different ones over 24 hours. An ultra sound of kidneys showed renal arteries ok, thou said kidneys were smaller overall than normal.Creatinine level was slightly high. They did the 24 hour urine test, was called I believe Creatine clearance test. results not back yet,,Also a blood test that took five vials of blood whic had to be packed in ice and sent to a lab somewhere away from hospital, guess this was to check something about kidneys also. And next week Im scheduled to have an MRI of kidneys.Besides blood pressure medicine I was taking they now have added hydrochloroshizide 25 mg and clonidine 0.1 mg.. Why does it take so many bp medications to bring bp down? And now it sometimes bottoms out, they awoke me in hospital the first night because pressure dropped down to 88/45.. They stopped the clonidine, and bp went right back up.so they added the clonidine again..When they dismissed me from hospital pressure was 108/52..Even thou bp is low,, still getting really bad headaches. On orders from hospital just tells me if I become dizzy, tired weak or faint to alert my doctor. And to go to nearest hospital if I experience any chest pain/or discomfort, or weakness or numbness of legs, arms or face..Why do I need so much BP medication? And why would my kidneys be smaller than normal? Sorry for this being so long. And sorry if all this seems confusing, I'm just so stressed out by it all.

strugglin_student replied: "Sounds miserable! You are taking so many different BP medications because your blood pressure is extremely high and they all work in different ways. BP that high can easily cause heart attacks and strokes, so they have you taking plavix and aspirin to reduce the chance of clot formation. Diovan blocks a molecule in the body called angiotensin II. Angiotensin II causes your blood vessels to get tight (vasoconstrict), and tells your adrenal glands to release aldosterone, both mechanisms which will increase your BP. Hydrochlorothiazide tells your body to dump extra fluid, through urination, to bring your BP down. Clonidine directly tells your blood vessels to relax (vasodilate) to bring the BP down. 108/52 is a fine BP to have, many women will have normal systolic BP's below 100 (the top number). The only reason this is dangerous and problematic is because if the BP is too low, you may not have enough blood pressure to perfuse your brain. Also, a low BP tells your body to raise the BP though vasoconstriction and release of renin (all the mechanisms that your medications are trying to block!). When your BP is too low, you feel light-headed and faint. Your kidneys may just be smaller than normal. The reason they were concerned about this, is because the kidneys play a big part in regulating your BP. If your kidneys don't get enough blood, they tell your body that the BP is too low, and try to increase it. Some of the blood tests and urine tests are probably to check the adrenal gland functions. They are probably trying to rule out pheochromocytoma. Did they check you for coarctation of the aorta? Hope you feel better soon."
